Ever since I started listening to music I’ve been mesmerized by a solid back beat. How some players turn a pulse from a click track to a living breathing performance full of passion and life. Continue Reading…
As I think about how I hear about and listen to new music it usually comes from two main sources. The number one source is my wife and the second is my students. Although, in the last couple of years, the latter has been validating that I’ve been in a music listening rut. They bring Guitar Hero song requests taking me back to when I started playing guitar.
Adele, Bon Iver, Fiest, Sia, and Buena Vista Social Club are just a few examples of music I never would have listened to if my wife hadn’t started listening to it first. Almost everything she listens to is different than I would search out and because of this I learn a great deal musically as the ideas are not usually ideas I would every think of. There have been a few really horrible selections that she has made however. Like the french Starbucks Compilation that I had to ban from my car. But for the most part it is a really great source of new music that keeps me from staying stagnant in my ideas. Continue Reading…

I’ve had the privilege to work with Wes in the studio several times and was truly in awe of his musical depth and maturity. Bass players out there, if you are looking for THE instructor in town, he’s it. Share this post with any bass players you know in Calgary.
A couple weeks ago I had a gig with the funk / R&B band I play with and I decided to give In ear monitors another shot. I’ve had really bad experiences in the past with not having a wedge and they have kept me from repeating them. Maybe it was my lack of sleep but I decided live on the edge and try them again. No matter what type of gear I play through I always come back to great pedals. That doesn’t mean I don’t love and use some of the new guitar technology that is out there but there is something about a well designed pedalboard with boutique pedals that I can not duplicate without the real thing.
I love talking about how the musicians I play with got to where they are at. There are so many great ideas, especially when you ask musicians of other instruments. I remember when I started to play guitar I was driven by just owning a guitar. I put an LP or tapes (I know I’m old) in my stereo and played along, to the chagrin of my parents and brother I’m sure. I had no form, structure or goals when I practiced but surprisingly this took me quite far. This extended phase of discovery lasted for quite a while and sometimes I would actually hit the same note or be kind of in the same key of the music I was playing to. The excitement of that motivated me until the next chance emulation of the music I loved. Continue Reading…
